Junior Rangers FAQ
Junior Rangers is a free, fun and educational State-run program for kids aged 7-11. Over the course of the program, kids will learn about various subjects pertaining to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, including our native mammals, plants, reptiles, insects and more, through fun activities and hikes.
How much does it cost?
It’s FREE!
How old do my kids have to be to sign up?
Your child(ren) should be between ages 7-12
When is the next Junior Ranger program?
Each program is scheduled based on seasonality, staff-availability and resources. The best way to find out about any up and coming programs is to view the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Events Calendar.
I subscribed to your mailing list but have received no emails.
If you filled out your information to subscribe to our mailing list and have not yet received an email it may be for the following reasons:
1.) The email ended up in your spam folder. Check your spam folder and add torrey.pines@parks.ca.gov to your contacts.
2.) We have not sent out any emails since you’ve signed up. Please be patient with us while we work on and schedule the next Junior Ranger program. We will email you to announce the next Junior Ranger program.
How long does the Junior Ranger Program run for?
Each program is roughly 90 minutes long.
Can I drop my kid off and come back?
Only for programs designated as drop-off only. Before the program begins, a parent or guardian must complete a registration form and provide emergency contact information. Please note that most of our Junior Ranger programs are drop-in programs and require a parent or guardian to stay with their child.
Can I stay with my kid(s)?
Only for programs designated as drop-in programs. For drop-off programs, only registered participants will attend unless otherwise noted.
Are the programs held outside?
Yes, the programs are generally held outside. There may be an activity that is held inside our historic, adobe Lodge.
What is the adult to child ratio?
2-3 adults for every 8 kids.
How much does parking cost?
The parking fee varies depending on the season and day of the week.
Are there restrooms?
Toilets are available at the beach parking lot; Porta Potties are available at the top of the hill in our West parking lot, accompanied with handwashing stations.
What should my child(ren) wear to Junior Rangers?
Clothing that is weather appropriate and close-toed shoes are best.
Are there any personal items my kid(s) should bring?
Sunscreen, sunglasses and water are great items to have on hand.
Backpacks (unless used for carrying water/sunscreen/medicine) can get in the way so, if possible, keep those at home or in the car. We provide the Junior Rangers with all the materials they will need for the activities.
Can my kid(s) bring a snack?
Please note, there is no food allowed in the Reserve. Plan ahead and eat breakfast before arriving. If you plan on having snacks after the program, you may have a picnic on the beach.
